MTP Sprains

Definition:
An injury to a ligament of the MTP when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dilocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the MTP.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the great toe
  • Swelling in the great toe
  • Loss of ROM in the great toe
  • Pain with walking
Causes:
  • Forced hypertension of great toe
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
