Sprains of the Metatarsophalangeal Joint

Definition:
An injury to the metatarsophalangeal joint when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture. "Turf toe"
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the toe
  • Pain with walking, running, jumping
  • Swelling in the toe
  • Loss of ROM in the toe
Causes:
  • Hyperextension of the toe
  • Associated with playing on artificial turf (rigid surface)
Treatment:
  • Wear a shoe with a rigid sole
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
