Sprains of the Interphalangeal Joint (Foot)

Definition:
An injury to the interphalangeal joint when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the finger
  • Swelling in the finger
  • Loss of ROM in the finger
  • Bruising in the finger
Causes:
  • Twisting and jamming force on the end of the finger
  • Hyperextension of the finger
  • Overstretching by radial or ulnar forces
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
