Sprains of the Hind foot

Definition:
An injury to the hind foot when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the hindfoot
  • Swelling in the hindfoot
  • Loss of ROM in the ankle
  • Bruising in the hindfoot
Causes:
  • Sudden supination of the the foot
  • Repetitive stress of the calcaneocuboid joint
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Balance training
  • Gait training
  • Lower extremity strengthening
