Sprains of the Mid Foot

Definition:
An injury to the mid foot when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the midfoot
  • Swelling in the midfoot
  • Loss of ROM in the midfoot
  • Pain with weight bearing
  • Point tender on midfoot joints
Causes:
  • Excessive cutting and twisting
  • Foot is planted and body turns forcefully
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Balance training
  • Gait program
