Crushing Injury of the Ankle

Definition:
An injury caused by a crushing blow to the ankle is different from all other injuries in the amount and unpredictability of the damage that is caused, the amount of scar tissue and the time required for healing.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the foot
  • Numbness in the foot
  • Stiffness in the foot
  • Laceration
Causes:
  • Large, heavy object falling on ankle
  • Tire running over foot
  • Foot caught between two moving objects
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching to the foot
  • Intrinsic foot muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening exercises
  • Wound care
