Fracture of the Lateral Mallelous
Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the lateral mallelous.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the ankle
- Swelling in the ankle
- Loss of ROM in the ankle
- Bruising
- Possible deformity in the ankle
Causes:
- Fall from a height
- Twisting ankle
- Direct blow
- Awkward landing from a jump
Treatment:
- Period of immobilization
- Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
- Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
- Lower extremity strengthening
- Gait program
