Fracture of the Trimalleolar

Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the trimalleolar.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the ankle
  • Swelling in the ankle
  • Loss of ROM in the ankle
  • Bruising
  • Possible deformity in the ankle
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Point tender
Causes:
  • Twisting or rotating your ankle
  • Rolling your ankle
  • Tripping or falling
  • Impact during a car accident
Treatment:
  • Possible surgical
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening
