Fracture of the Calcaneus
Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the calcaneus.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the heel
- Bruising
- Swelling in the ankle and heel
- Heel deformity
- Inability to put weight on the heel or walk
Causes:
- Fall from a height
- Impact during motor vehicle accident
- Twisting injury
Treatment:
- Period of immobilization
- Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
- Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
- Lower extremity strengthening
- Possible surgical intervention
