Fracture of the Navicular
Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the navicular.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the base of the thumb
- Swelling in the base of the thumb
- Tenderness over the thumb side of the wrist
- Pain with gripping
Causes:
- Fall on an outstretched hand
- Direct blow
- Motor vehicle accident
Treatment:
- Period of immobilization
- Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
- Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
- Upper extremity strengthening
