Fracture of the Metatarsal Bones
Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the metatarsal bones.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the foot
- Swelling in the foot
- Loss of ROM in the foot
- Bruising
Causes:
- Direct trauma
- Excessive rotational forces
- Overuse
Treatment:
- Period of immobilization
- Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
- Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
- Lower extremity strengthening
