Rupture of Peroneal Tendon
Definition:
A solution of continuity or a tear; a break of the peroneal tendon.
Symptoms:
- Pain inferior and posterior to the lateral mallelous
- Swelling inferior and posterior to the lateral mallelous
- Loss of strength in the ankle
- Lateral ankle instability
Causes:
- Inversion ankle injury
- Powerful contraction of peroneal muscles with a forefully dorsiflexed foot
- Degeneration
- Faulty biomechanics
Treatment:
- Possible surgical intervention
- Progressing to ROM and stretching
- Ankle stabilization exercises
- Lower extremity strengthening
- Gait mechanics correction
