Bursitis of the Knee

Definition:
Inflammation of a bursa, a closed sac or envelope lined with synovial membrane and containing synovial fluid, within the knee.
Symptoms:
  • Point tender on the bursa
  • Pain with kneeling on the knee
  • Swelling in the knee
  • Stiffness in the knee
  • Pain with walking
Causes:
  • Overuse
  • Repetitive motion
  • Direct impact
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Incorrect training
  • Tight hamstring muscles
  • Osteoarthritis
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching to the knee
  • Strengthening lower extremity muscles
  • Correct faulty gait or training pattern
