Osteoarthrosis of the Lower Leg

Definition:
Arthritis characterized by erosion of articular cartilage of the lower leg, which becomes soft, frayed, and thinned with eburnation of subchondral bone and outgrowths of marginal osteophytes; pain and loss of function result.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the lower leg
  • Stiffness in the lower leg
  • Loss of ROM in the lower leg
  • Crepitus in the lower leg with movement
Causes:
  • Wear and tear
  • Trauma
  • Previous fracture
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Lower leg stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening exercise
