Crushing Injury of the Lower Leg

Definition:
An injury caused by a crushing blow to the lower leg is different from all other injuries in the amount and unpredictability of the damage that is caused, the amount of scar tissue and the time required for healing.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the lower leg
  • Loss of ROM in the lower leg
  • Laceration
  • Possible fracture
Causes:
  • Motor vehicle accident
  • Heavy object falling onto lower leg
  • Heavy object rolling over lower leg
  • Direct blow
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching exercises to lower leg
  • Wound care
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Gait program
