Shoulder Spasm

Definition:
A sudden involuntary contraction of one or more muscles groups of the shoulder; includes cramps, contractures.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the shoulder
  • Loss of ROM in the shoulder
  • Pain with movement of the shoulder
  • Tenderness with palpation to the shoulder
Causes:
  • Stress
  • Overuse of the muscles during exercises or sports activities
  • Muscle strain
  • Aging
  • Dehydration
  • Posture
  • Poor diet
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Massage therapy
  • Shoulder stabilization exercises
  • Upper extremity strengthening
  • Posture program
