Colles Fracture

Definition:
A 'Colles' fracture', also 'Colles fracture', is a fracture (bone) of the distal radius (bone) in the forearm with dorsal (posterior) displacement of the wrist and hand. The fracture is sometimes referred to as a "dinner fork"; or "bayonet" deformity due to the shape of the resultant forearm.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the wrist
  • Deformity consisting of wrist flexion and radial deviation
Causes:
  • Fall on an outstretched hand
  • Osteoporosis
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilizaton
  • Progress to ROM and stretching to wrist and forearm
  • Wrist and forearm strengthening exercises
