Osteochondritis Dissecans Hip
Definition:
Complete or incomplete separation of a portion of joint cartilage and underlying bone of the hip.
Symptoms:
- Catching
- Loss of ROM in the hip
- Pain in the hip
- Swelling in the hip
- Point tender on the hip
Causes:
- Repetitive physical trauma
- Ischemia (restriction of blood flow)
- Hereditary
- Endocrine factors
- Avascular necrosis (loss of blood flow)
- Rapid growth
- Deficiencies and imbalances in the ratio of calcium to phosphorus
- Anomalies of bone formation
Treatment:
- Period of immobilization
- ROM and stretching
- Hip stabilization strengthening
- Lower extremity strengthening exercise
- Possible surgical intervention
