Monteggias Fracture of Radius

Definition:
Fracture of the proximal ulna with dislocation of the head of the radius.
Symptoms:
  • Elbow pain
  • Swelling in the elbow/forearm
  • Loss of ROM in the elbow or forearm
  • Possible physical deformity
  • Numbness or tingling
Causes:
  • Fall on an outstretched hand with the forearm in excessive pronation (hyper-pronation injury)
  • Direct blow on back of upper forearm
Treatment:
  • Possible surgical intervention
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching
  • Hand intrinsic strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening exercises
