Monteggias Fracture of Radius
Definition:
Fracture of the proximal ulna with dislocation of the head of the radius.
Symptoms:
- Elbow pain
- Swelling in the elbow/forearm
- Loss of ROM in the elbow or forearm
- Possible physical deformity
- Numbness or tingling
Causes:
- Fall on an outstretched hand with the forearm in excessive pronation (hyper-pronation injury)
- Direct blow on back of upper forearm
Treatment:
- Possible surgical intervention
- Period of immobilization
- Progress to ROM and stretching
- Hand intrinsic strengthening
- Upper extremity strengthening exercises
