Rib Sprain/Strain

Definition:
An injury to a ligament of the rib when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dilocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the rib.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the ribcage
  • Swelling in the ribcage
  • Pain with breathing, coughing, laughing
  • Bruising
Causes:
  • Direct blow to ribcage
  • Crush injury
  • Persistent coughing
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Core stabilization exercises
  • Pain management
