Sprain/Strain Toe

Definition:
An injury to a ligament of the toe when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the toe.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the toe
  • Tenderness
  • Pain with toe movements
  • Bruising
  • Loss of ROM in the toe
  • Swelling in the toe
Causes:
  • Jamming your toe into something
  • Landing awkwardly after jumping
  • Stopping suddenly
  • Having your toe collide with the front of your shoe
  • Stubbing your toe into something hard while walking
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Massage to reduce swelling
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Gait program
