Definition:

An injury to a ligament of the thoracic spine when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dilocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the thoracic spine.

Symptoms:

• Mid back pain
• Loss of ROM in the thoracic spine
• Tenderness with palpation to thoracic spine

Causes:

• Heavy lifting
• Twisting motions
• Involvement in sports
• Poor posture or body mechanics
• Motor vehicle accidents
• Falls

Treatment:

• ROM and stretching
• Soft tissue massage
• Core stabilization exercises
• Lower extremity strengthening
• Posture program
