TMT Sprain
Definition:
An injury to the tarsometatarsal joint when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
Pain in the foot
Swelling in the foot
Point tender to the tarsometatarsal ligament
Unable to stand on tip toe
Loss of ROM
Causes:
Axial load sustained with foot plantarflexed and slightly rotated
High-energy trauma
Fall
Motor vehicle accident
Treatment:
Period of immobilization
Progress to ROM and stretching
Soft tissue massage
Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
Lower extremity strengthening
Gait program
