S/P High Tibial Osteotomy

Definition:
Tibia is cut and then reshaped to relieve pressure on the knee joint. The goals of an osteotomy is to transfer weight from the arthritic part of the knee to a healthier area, to correct poor knee alignmentm, to prolong the life span of the knee joint.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the knee
  • Stiffness in the knee
Causes:
  • Osteoarthritis
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization in a locked extension knee brace
  • Passive ROM, then progress to AROM
  • Quadriceps activation exercises
  • Knee stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Gait program
