S/P Cheilectomy

Definition:
Excision of a portion of the great toe. Chiseling away bony irregularities at osteochondral margin of a joint cavity that interferes with movements of the joint.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the great toe
  • Loss of ROM in the great toe
  • Pain with walking, wearing heels, standing
  • Burning or numbness
Causes:
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bone spurs
Treatment:
  • Passive ROM to great toe
  • Stretching lower extremity musculature
  • Massage to reduce swelling
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Gait program
