Sprain/Strain Lumbar

Definition:
An injury to a ligament of the lumbar spine when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dilocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the lumbar spine.
Symptoms:
  • Low back pain and upper buttock pain
  • Loss of ROM in the lumbar spine
  • Low back muscle spasm
  • Pain associated with activities, and generally relieved with rest
Causes:
  • Faulty posture
  • Heavy lifting
  • Direct blow
  • Fall
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Weakness in core musculature
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Core stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening
