Definition:

Correction of a bunion will involves cutting the bones and realigning the deviated first toe. The most important goal of any bunion surgery is to reduce the chronic toe joint dislocation and restore to a more normal anatomy. Many patients are concerned about removing the bunion prominence. This happens naturally when the deformity is corrected.

Symptoms:

• Swelling on the medial great toe
• Redness on the medial great toe
• Physical deformity- lateral deviation of the great toe
• Pain with walking
• Pain in the great toe joint

Causes:

• Congential
• Tight-fitting shoes

Treatment:

• Passive ROM to great toe
• Stretching lower extremity musculature
• Massage to reduce swelling
• Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
• Lower extremity strengthening
• Gait program
