Sprain/Strain Hand

Definition:
An injury to a ligament of the hand when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the hand.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the hand
  • Loss of ROM in the hand
  • Swelling in the hand
  • Tenderness with palpation
  • Bruising
  • Stiffness in the hand
Causes:
  • Accident or traumatic impact, such as a fall or direct and forceful contact
  • Repetitive gripping or hand use
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
  • Posture program
