AC/Clavicle Sprain/Strain

Definition:
An injury to a ligament of the AC/clavicle when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the AC/clavicle joint.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the front of the shoulder
  • Point tender to the AC/clavicle joint
  • Pain with overhead shoulder movements
  • Possible bump on the top of the shoulder
Causes:
  • Fall on the tip of the shoulder
  • Fall on an outstretched hand
Treatment:
  • Period of sling use for immobilization
  • Stretching and shoulder ROM exercises
  • Posture program
  • Strengthening shoulder stabilizers
