Sprain/Strain Leg

Definition:
An injury to a ligament of the leg when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dilocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the leg.
Symptoms:
  • Leg Pain worse with movement
  • Leg bruising
  • Leg swelling
  • Leg stiffness
  • Leg tenderness
  • Difficulty walking
Causes:
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Lack of warm-up and/or stretching before activity
  • Knee twisting motion
  • Repetitive stress to knee
  • Trauma to knee
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Knee stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening exercises
  • Gait program
