Lumbosacral Root Lesions

Definition:
A wound or injury of the lumbosacral root. A pathological change in the tissues. One of the individual points or patches of a multifocal disease.
Symptoms:
  • Saddle anesthesia and variable motor and sensory loss
  • Decreased anal tone and reflex
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Urinary retention
  • Lower extremity weakness
  • Leg pain
  • Lateral trunk lean
  • Decreased ROM in the lumbar spine
Causes:
  • Disc herniation
  • Direct injury (trauma)
  • Prolonged pressure on the nerve
  • Compression or entrapment of the nerve by nearby parts of the body or disease-related structures (such as a tumor)
Treatment:
  • Seek medical advise
  • ROM and stretching exercises
  • Core stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening
