Definition:

Thoracic disc disorder with myelopathy involves bulging or displacement of discs between the vertebrae of the thoracic spine (thoracic intervertebral disc herniation) with accompanying spinal cord compression. Myelopathy is an inclusive term referring to any disease of the spinal canal. The thoracic region specifies the middle portion of the spine.

Symptoms:

• Pain in the back
• Radiating pain
• Altered gait pattern
• Weakness in lower extremity
• Decreased sensation of lower extremity
• Hyper active reflexes

Causes:

• Age related disc degeneration
• Herniation of a thoracic disc
• Spinal stenosis
• Rupture of thoracic disc

Treatment:

• Posture program
• ROM and stretching exercises for back
• Lower extremity strengthening exercises
• Core stabilization exercises
