Fracture of Phalanx

Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the phalanx.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the finger or toe
  • Swelling in the finger or toe
  • Loss of ROM in the finger or toe
  • Bruising
  • Possible deformity in the finger or toe
Causes:
  • Jammed finger or toe
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Falls
  • Contact sports
  • Direct impact to the finger or toe
  • Workplace dangers
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Hand or foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper or lower extremity strengthening
