Fracture of Proximal Phalanx Shaft
Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the proximal phalanx shaft.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the finger or toe
- Swelling in the finger or toe
- Loss of ROM in the finger or toe
- Bruising
- Possible deformity in the finger or toe
Causes:
- Jammed finger or toe
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Falls
- Contact sports
- Direct impact to the finger or toe
- Workplace dangers
Treatment:
- Period of immobilization
- Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
- Hand or foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
- Upper or lower extremity strengthening
