Fracture of Middle Phalanx Shaft

Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the middle phalanx shaft.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the finger or toe
  • Swelling in the finger or toe
  • Loss of ROM in the finger or toe
  • Bruising
  • Possible deformity in the finger or toe
Causes:
  • Heavy object falling onto hand or toe
  • Crush injury
  • Fall
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Hand or foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper or lower extremity strengthening
