Sprains and Strain of the Interphalangeal Joint

Definition:
An injury to the interphalangeal joint when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the finger or toe
  • Swelling in the finger or toe
  • Loss of ROM in the finger or toe
Causes:
  • Stubbed toe
  • Jammed finger
  • Direct blow
  • Hyperextension injury
  • Fall
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Upper extremity strengthening
