Sprains and Strain of the Radial Collateral Ligament

Definition:
An injury to the radial collateral ligament when the joint is carried through a of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the wrist and thumb
  • Loss of ROM in the wrist and thumb
  • Swelling in the wrist and thumb
  • Pain with pinching
  • Thumb instability
Causes:
  • Forced adduction of the thumb
  • Repetitive thumb adduction
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization
  • ROM and stretching
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
