Osteoarthrosis of the Hand

Definition:
Arthritis characterized by erosion of articular cartilage of the hand, which becomes soft, frayed, and thinned with eburnation of subchondral bone and outgrowths of marginal osteophytes; pain and loss of function result.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the hand
  • Stiffness in the hand
  • Loss of ROM in the hand
  • Crepitus in the hand with movement
  • Swelling in the hand
Causes:
  • Joint instability and misalignment
  • Heavy usage
  • Traumatic injuries that result in joint irregularities
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening exercise
