Stiffness in the Hand

Definition:
Nonspecific term for limited hand mobility, often due to muscle cramps and spasm accompanied by pain.
Symptoms:
  • Loss of ROM in the hand
  • Pain in the hand
  • Swelling in the hand
Causes:
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fracture
  • Muscle sprain/strain
  • Tendinitis
  • Tendon rupture
  • Burn
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Trigger finger
  • DeQuervain's tendinitis
  • Gout
  • Diabetes
  • Dupuytren's contracture
  • Muscle spasm
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching exercises
  • Upper extremity strengthening
  • Hand intrinsic strengthening
  • Posture program
