Fracture of Scaphoid Bone of Wrist

Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the scaphoid bone of wrist.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the base of the thumb
  • Swelling in the base of the thumb
  • Loss of ROM in the wrist and thumb
  • Bruising
  • Pain with gripping
Causes:
  • Fall on an outstretched hand
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Sports collisions
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
