Dislocated Finger, Thumb

Definition:
Displacement of the thumb or finger; specifically disturbance or disarrangement of the normal relation of the bones entering into the formation of a joint.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the finger or thumb
  • Swelling in the finger or thumb
  • Loss of ROM in the finger or thumb
  • Instability in the finger or thumb
  • Physical deformity- finger not in correct alignment
Causes:
  • Common in collision sports
  • Impact of the fingers or thumb against an object, person, ball, or piece of equipment
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
