Dislocation of the Carpometacarpal Bone

Definition:
Displacement of the carpometacarpal bone; specifically disturbance or disarrangement of the normal relation of the bones entering into the formation of a joint.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the thumb
  • Swelling in the thumb
  • Loss of ROM in the thumb
  • Instability in the thumb
  • Physical deformity- thumb not in correct alignment
Causes:
  • Common in collision sports
  • Impact of the thumb against an object, person, ball, or piece of equipment
  • Osteoarthritis
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
