Dislocation of the Metacarpal Bone

Definition:

Displacement of the metacarpal bone; specifically disturbance or disarrangement of the normal relation of the bones entering into the formation of a joint.

Symptoms:

Hand swelling
Pain in the hand
Decreased ROM in the fingers and/or hand
Possible deformity in the hand

Causes:

Fall onto the hand
Direct blow to the hand
Crush injuries

Treatment:

Period of immobilization
Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
Upper extremity strengthening
