Dislocation of the Metacarpal Bone

Definition:
Displacement of the metacarpal bone; specifically disturbance or disarrangement of the normal relation of the bones entering into the formation of a joint.
Symptoms:
  • Hand swelling
  • Pain in the hand
  • Decreased ROM in the fingers and/or hand
  • Possible deformity in the hand
Causes:
  • Fall onto the hand
  • Direct blow to the hand
  • Crush injuries
Treatment:
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
