Sprains and Strain of the Carpal Joint

Definition:
An injury to the carpal joint when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the wrist
  • Wrist instability
  • Swelling in the wrist
  • Weakness in the wrist
Causes:
  • Fall onto an outstretched hand
  • Direct blow
  • Faulty ergonomics
  • Repetitive movements
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
  • Ergonomics training
