Recurrent Dislocation of Elbow

Definition:
Repeated displacement of the elbow; specifically disturbance or disarrangement of the normal relation of the bones entering into the formation of a joint.
Symptoms:
  • Elbow instability
  • Locking, catching, or clicking
  • Pain in the elbow
  • Loss of throwing velocity
  • Loss of strength
Causes:
  • Instability
  • Previous elbow dislocation
  • Arthritis
  • Fall on an outstretched hand
  • Damage to lateral collateral ligament or ulnar collateral ligament
Treatment:
  • Possible surgical intervention
  • Upper extremity strengthening exercises
  • Elbow stabilization exercises
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
