Bucket Handle Tear Medial Meniscus

Definition:
A tear in one of the menisci of a knee joint, near the rim and following its curvature, which can allow a flap of cartilage to impede movement of the joint.
Symptoms:
  • Intermittent locking of the knee
  • Unable to fully extend knee
  • Swelling in the knee
  • Pain with full knee flexion
  • Point tender on joint line
Causes:
  • Twisting and pivoting the knee
  • Squatting and twisting the knee
  • Direct blow to knee
  • Degeneration
Treatment:
  • Knee ROM and stretching exercises
  • Strengthening exercises for lower extremity
  • Possible surgical intervention
