Iliiotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome

Definition:
A syndrome of knee pain that may result from inflammation due to mechanical friction of the iliotibial band and the lateral femoral epicondyle.
Symptoms:
  • Lateral knee pain
  • Stinging sensation just above the knee joint
  • Swelling or thickening of the tissue
  • Pain may not occur immediately during activity, but may intensify over time
Causes:
  • Poor training habits
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Anatomical abnormalities
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Lower extremity muscle strengthening
  • Correct gait/running pattern
  • Improve training habits
