Iliiotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome
Definition:
A syndrome of knee pain that may result from inflammation due to mechanical friction of the iliotibial band and the lateral femoral epicondyle.
Symptoms:
- Lateral knee pain
- Stinging sensation just above the knee joint
- Swelling or thickening of the tissue
- Pain may not occur immediately during activity, but may intensify over time
Causes:
- Poor training habits
- Muscle imbalance
- Anatomical abnormalities
Treatment:
- ROM and stretching
- Lower extremity muscle strengthening
- Correct gait/running pattern
- Improve training habits
