Sprains and Strain of the Medial Collateral Ligament (Knee)

Definition:
An injury to the MCL of the knee when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to the MCL of the knee.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the knee
  • Stiffness in the knee
  • Swelling in the knee
  • Tenderness along the inside of the knee
  • A feeling that your knee may give way under stress or may lock or catch
Causes:
  • Direct blow to knee
  • Repetitive medial stress in the knee
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Knee stabilization exercises
  • Gait program
  • Lower extremity strengthening
