In the case of an older ACL tear that occurred long prior to evaluation, the patient may complain of instability, or a sensation of the knee giving away. They may also complain of pain which can be in the front of the knee as well.
Symptoms:
Instability in the knee
Feels like knee is giving way
Anterior knee pain
Stiffness in the knee
Causes:
Most common in high impact sports
Knee hyperextension
The lower leg is forced forward in relation to the upper leg
Direct impact from the front of the thigh while the lower leg is in a stable position
Treatment:
Possible surgical intervention
Progressing to knee ROM and strengthening exercises
