Old ACL Tear

Definition:
In the case of an older ACL tear that occurred long prior to evaluation, the patient may complain of instability, or a sensation of the knee giving away. They may also complain of pain which can be in the front of the knee as well.
Symptoms:
  • Instability in the knee
  • Feels like knee is giving way
  • Anterior knee pain
  • Stiffness in the knee
Causes:
  • Most common in high impact sports
  • Knee hyperextension
  • The lower leg is forced forward in relation to the upper leg
  • Direct impact from the front of the thigh while the lower leg is in a stable position
Treatment:
  • Possible surgical intervention
  • Progressing to knee ROM and strengthening exercises
  • Core stabilization exercises
