Sprains and Strain of the Posterior Cruciate Ligament

Definition:
An injury to the posterior cruciate ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force.
Symptoms:
  • Knee pain
  • Swelling in the knee
  • Loss of ROM
  • Knee instability
Causes:
  • "Dashboard injury"- knee is bent, and an object forcefully strikes the shin
  • backwards
  • Motor vehicle accident
  • Fall to the front of the knee
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Knee stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Gait program
